Ellen Jaye Benson
Australian Mixed-Media Artist and Art Educator
"All paintings start out of a mood, out of a relationship with things or people, out of a complete visual impression."
- Richard Diebenkorn
"Art is a step from what is obvious and well-known toward what is arcane and concealed" - Khalil Gibrane
Seated somewhere between representation and abstraction, my work treads both observed and metaphorical territories. My artworks function as a suggestive and ambiguous narrative space. An allegorical journey always accompanies a process-based exploration. A struggle between the primal and formal plays out; informed by memory and intuitive forces as much as by formal elements of art and design. Expressive colour, spatial and textural play in my artworks tease the senses. Simulating the precarious persistence of our adaptive nostalgic memory. My work also evidences a love for the materiality and experimental potential of mixing art media.
